This holiday season, the risk for cargo theft is especially high, warns FreightWatch International, as Christmas and New Year's both occur on a Friday. These back-to-back, three-day weekends leave even more opportunity for thieves to strike as shipments are left unattended for extended periods of time in unsecured lots.

‘Tis the season for cargo theft, as we head into the long holiday weekend, Nov. 26-29, and onward through peak shipping time. According to FreightWatch International, the “concentration” of cargo theft activity between the high shipping months of September and December totaled 245 incidents in 2014. And Thanksgiving weekends over a recent three-year period have seen an increase of more than three times the annual average of thefts per day.

As we head into the Labor Day holiday, the long weekend running September 4 through 7 poses threats for major strikes in cargo theft. Labor Day is always the starting gun for an average 61% increase in cargo theft because stores start stocking up for Black Friday.
